Premium Goose Down Fill

Premium Goose Down Fill

We use premium 800+ and 650+ fill power goose down in different products depending on the design and end-use. Down is still the most thermally efficient insulation available, providing more warmth for its weight than any other insulation available. Down is also superior in its drape, comfort, lifespan, and compressibility. All of our down is renewably managed using a hypoallergenic processing technique.

800 Fill Power
800+ fill power down is more compressible and provides a greater loft to weight ratio than 650+ fill power, and is used in our highest performance down products. We specify a 90/10 cluster to feather ratio for optimum loft and recovery.

650 Fill Power
Our 650+ fill power down is 15% loftier than the industry standard 550+ fill power down and exhibits excellent compressibility and recovery characteristics. We process it to an 85/15 cluster to feather ratio to emphasize maximum recovery from compression.

Recycled Content

Recycled Content

Our newly developed Tier 1 recycled polyester and nylon materials test to the same high standards as their conventional, non-recycled alternatives.  We use them whenever possible because of the massive reductions in energy use and resource consumption required to produce them vs. the virgin, petroleum-based alternatives.  More information can be found under ‘Performance Technology’ within ‘The Meaning of Lite’ section of this website.

Sleeping Bags

Washing

It’s best to hand-wash your sleeping bag. Fill a bathtub with warm water, soak the bag, add Nikwax Down or Tech Wash (preferred) or a gentle soap such as Woolite, Ivory Flakes, or Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, kneed the soapy water through the baffles, and then rinse until the water is fairly clean. To dry, follow the instructions below. DO NOT DRY CLEAN! DO NOT USE BLEACH OR FABRIC SOFTENER! Small stains such as sap, tar, or oils can be spot cleaned using soap or diluted spot-cleaning solvent (such as Shout or Spray-N-Wash). Move down away from the spot being cleaned.

It is possible to machine-wash down and synthetic sleeping bags. First, though, consider the following factors:

  • The impeller in a top-loader washing machine treats insulated garments harshly and therefore reduces their lifespan.
  • The perimeter and the baffle seams can tear, especially when the insulation is wet (thus heavier).
  • Normal household detergents will strip the natural oils from down, and residues from these cleaners will degrade the DWR-finish of the shell fabric.
  • Therefore, if you are going to machine-wash your insulated garment, we recommend that you:
  • Use the gentle cycle on a front-loader washer.
  • Use a mild detergent such as Woolite or a down-specific soap like NikWax Down Wash.
  • Rinse the sleeping bag more than once. This will remove detergent residue, which will improve overall performance.

Drying

Particularly in the case of down bags, drying is as important as washing. Down bags can appear to be dry from the outside while, in fact, its core is still damp, which can lead to mildew.

  • Using a tumble-dryer is recommended. Place tennis balls in the drum with the sleeping bag to "fluff" it up as it rotates. Commercial dryers have larger drums than home machines and are therefore preferable if several garments are being dried at the same time.
  • If you air-dry your down bag, remember to shake it regularly during the drying process to prevent clumps from forming.

Restoring DWR Finish

The DWR finish can be degraded by normal wear and tear, as well as exposure to contaminants such as oil, dirt and detergent residue. (Detergents strip the DWR finish by leaving water-attractive molocules in the face fabric.) When a DWR finish is degraded, the product will not shed water as effectively, causing the loft of the insulation and its ability to keep you warm to decline when it gets wet.

  • Using after-market spray-on treatments such as Gore-Revivex or Nikwax TX.Direct can restore water-repellency.
  • The effectiveness of the treatment can be enhanced by placing your garment in a dryer with low heat after application.

Durable product-- Tested in Sept. 30 degree temps

Great bag, but not warm enough for me (a woman) in 30 degree temps. But, I used it just fine in 40 degree temps. Its 40 degree rating is pretty accurate. You could extend the temp rating by adding a silk liner and wearing a down jacket and down pants and down hood to bed. Ultralighters- consider using this bag unzipped for 2 in the summer.
